The concept of FreeG was first developed by British Gymnastics, fusing traditional gymnastics and acrobatic tricks, with kicks and leaps made famous through martial arts and brought to worldwide attention by festival performances and stunt actors. FreeG assists participants to develop a heightened sense of spatial awareness that can be put to good use in a variety of other sports (including boarding, biking, snowboarding, climbing and surfing).

FreeG (freestyle gymnastics) is a class where the participants are given a certain level of freedom to develop their own ‘paths’ within gymnastics, not being fixed to the apparatus or skills of one discipline.

In a freestyle class, participants find new and creative uses for traditional gymnastics apparatus, combining different apparatus into a series of obstacles. Many familiar gymnastics skills have been modified to increase difficulty, or include a new take off technique, and a variety of new skills have been developed within this discipline. Freestyle draws upon influences from several areas other than traditional gymnastics, including martial arts, tricking and break-dance. Many of the skills included in FreeG are common gymnastics skills including vaulting, saultos, swings, jumps and turns.
